“Transmute” Group Exhibition to Rock Nuit blanche à Montréal 2012

A collective of Montreal artists are joining forces to produce “Transmute,” a multi-disciplinary exhibitions that promises to shake up Montreal’s all-night Nuit blanche festival from February 25 to March 17, 2012. “Transmute” brings together painting, sculpture, poetry, video and performance art to create an absurdist art safari in which our supposedly civilized fantasies of flora and fauna forcibly take the front seat.
“Transmute” will happen at Fresh Paint Gallery, an independent art space located at 180 Ste-Catherine East. Please join us for a drink the night of Nuit blanche (February 25) and get ready to enjoy the show!
Works featured will focus on animality and transformation. Laurence Vallières, assisted by Jessica Lau, will exhibit a gigantic sculptural monkey carrying the Sydney Opera House on its back. Edwin Janzen’s video installation, “Lost Islands,” will enfold the viewer in vintage recontextualized cinematic fantasies of movie monsters and tropical islands. Tiffany Moore’s visual experiments of nostalgic contemplation in Chinese ink on paper, Geneviève Gallant will present installation piece on nature’s industrialization, while Gillian King’s colourful paintings depict harsh narratives of animal exploitation.
The evening will also feature several events, including a poetic performance by Kyle Patrick on the animal-in-oursleves, a performance-sculpture by Sarah Zakaib on the theme of the “doppleganger” or “double,” and a contemporary solo dance performance by Bettina Szabo.
Tunes and beats graciously provided by DJ N.D.M.A, amazing DJ from Ontario with a fast paced sound ranging from experimental indie to hip hop, who will close the performances and keep the music pumping into the wee hours.
In addition to the night of Nuit Blanche itself, the exhibition will be up until March 17. Fresh Paint Gallery is open Wednesday to Saturday, noon to 7 p.m.
